Home buyers are always looking for the perfect combination: great schools, low taxes, good lifestyle and easy commute. Getting all of these perfectly organized might not be realistic but prioritizing what is most important will give you greater satisfaction in the home you do select. Commute time to work should definitely take a high priority in your home selection. These are some things to think about:
Commuting Cost: According to Lifehacker, each mile you live from work adds $795 per year to your commuting costs when you look at total travel costs. Homes may be more expensive closer to work but buying a less expensive house farther out may not save you money.
Lifestyle: Do you need night life or parks, restaurants and shopping, museums or wide-open spaces? If the surroundings of your home are more important than work, it may not be possible to live close to the office and the extra drive time might be worth it. It may not be worth it; however, if your goals are to maximize family time. Think about what's important to you in this equation.
Job Flexibility: If you can set our own hours, you may be able to avoid heavy traffic times. If you have that option in your work, you may be able to handle a longer drive.
Commuter Stress: Mentally, a long commute could wear on you. While some people don't mind a long commute, studies have shown that higher levels of stress are found in people with longer commutes.
