Put on your poker face. When speaking with the home's listing agent, ask and answer general questions, but don't share key details like your high-price mortgage approval or how much you love the home, or if your are on a tight timeline to move to avoid compromising your negotiating power.
Feel free to tell the agent you're just browsing. Open houses are publicl, so people who aren't seriously looking for a home are expected to stop in.
Check out the area. If you have no idea what type of home you want or are unfamiliar with the area, open houses are the perfect opportunity to see a variety of architectural styles and properties in different areas without putting in too much effort or commitment.
Focus on the home's big-ticket features. It's easy to get distracted by cosmetic updates and flashy features, make sure to look at more expensive items like the roof, HVAC and plumbing.
Bring your agent. Try to visit open houses together as you would a private showing and allows them to handle the conversation with the other agent maintaining a stronger position for negotiation if you like the home.
Try for a private showing as well. If possible, try to view outside of the open house hours if you are interested. This will give you the chance to take your time and consider the property in a more relaxed manner.
